TV has brought great benefits to society.
Television is one of the biggest human inventions. Television has been in
homes since the 1950s. Of course, it has brought a lot of benefits into our
lives. Naturally, it
has some downsides, too. So, let’s discuss both and decide how television
influences us.
One of the main advantages is that we can now take in
information quickly and learn about things we wouldn’t otherwise have learned
about. It allows us all to become much more aware about global issues, and grow
as people. Thanks to imported shows and satellite crews being able to
broadcast live from wherever they are, this has allowed people to
learn about unfamiliar lands, and other nationalities to learn about other
nations’ customs.
Even more we can get education staying at home and
only using our TV-set. Just remember those famous British distant-classes that
allows students who live in remote villages get education and take courses not
leaving their farms and homes.
But on the other hand,
a lot of people don’t take television that seriously and for many of them it
has been just the primary source of entertainment. People gather together to
watch some chat-shows or soap operas. The list is endless for the amount of
information transported into our homes every day, changing the way people live
and react to life situations. Politicians use TV for campaigning. For instance,
in USA the President uses TV to broadcast current events from the White House. Due
to the introduction of cable and satellite, people shop on TV, keep up-to-date
with the stock market, get live news coverage from CNN. We know when to buy and
sell stock, what natural disasters are headed our way and what latest fashions
to wear.
But of course,
television also has its downsides. One of which is that TV has its hypnotizing
characteristics and children and adults tend to spend hours in front of the
screen. We all know these “couch potatoes” kind of people who have less time to
interact with others resulting in poor social skills. Television can drain
productive time and efforts and essentially waste time on needless
entertainment. There’re also some other problems and one of them is, of course,
negatively TV influence on the youth when drugs or violence are shown.
All in all, I think, television has a good effect on
our lives. We can get much more information about remote events and we even can
get education staying at home. Also, television can be a good entertainment. However,
there’s some disadvantages such as wasting time or unnecessary information for
children.
