How to prevent a cold
Cold and
flu are the most common diseases among human beings because airborne droplets
from a cough or sneeze can travel far. «If one lands in your eyes or nose»,
explains Dr. Dennis Murray, professor of pediatrics and human development, «you
could wake up sick a few days later».
For instance, a sick person who transfers her cold germs from her nose to her
hands contaminates any object she touches. (Cold germ can survive for up to
three hours on inanimate objects). Others who handle the object and then rub
their own noses or eyes can get infected.
- «This is why hand-washing is by far the most important thing you can do to avoid catching a cold», says Dr. Joseph F. Plouffe. So wash at every opportunity.
- One study showed you probably touch these parts of your face as often as three times an hour. If you must, use a knuckle not a fingertip, because it’s less likely to be teeming with germs.
- Another method to avoid flu is except being at the places with poor air circulation because cold viruses can’t escape from there. So, office buildings, airplanes are a high-risk environments and another likely places to pick up cold germs.
- Lots of colds are caught in the kitchen. So don’t forget to put sponges and dishrags in the dish-washer on the hot cycle two or three times a week.
- Another simple method is to live a healthy life. Thirty to 45 minutes of moderate aerobic exercise, such as walking, cycling or dancing three times a week help us to prevent cold. And more isn’t necessarily better. Researchers have found that exercising vigorously for over an hour a day actually increases the likelihood that you’ll catch a cold. So, remember too much exercises can even hurt you.
- Also, you should get enough sleep because this keeps your immune cells powered up, according to research.
- Don’t ignore turning to some medical support. Vitamin E is believed to play an important role in immune function. But since its best food sources are fats and oils, people on low-fat diets may find it difficult to get enough. Doctors recommend taking a supplement of the vitamine E each day. To boost your body’s ability to use this nutrient, you should take the pill with a main meal — lunch or dinner — for most people.
- Echinacea, an edible flower, is believed to enhance your resistance to colds. Take it in extract, capsule, soft-gel or tablet form at the first sign of symptoms — and continue through the duration.
- Any warm fluid can help relieve cold symptoms and act as an expectorant. But chicken soup does seem to have an especially soothing effect.
And now I’d like to tell what I usually do to prevent flu!
The first method is to stay warm. Although
getting cold doesn't actually cause a cold or flu, but being cold
can reduce your quinsy and make you feel miserable. If your body feels cold and
you have already been exposed to the flu or cold virus, your personal reaction
to the cold may be enough to allow the flu or cold to take hold.
Eat healthily. Healthy
foods such as vegetables, fruit, grains, etc., are an important part of keeping
your body nutrition at its optimum. Processed, fatty, and sugary foods don't
give the immune-boosting protection that healthier food does. Sugary foods can
decrease immune function for up to five hours. Take Vitamin C. Whether
in the form of a tablet, drink, or fruit, vitamin C might help you prevent the
common cold. But of course, fresh oranges, grape fruits, pomelos are rich in
vitamin C, so they must become your best friends. Add more garlic to your
diet. Garlic has powerful anti-viral, antibiotic and anti-fungal properties and
boosts the immune system in general. Studies have shown that those who consume
garlic daily are two-thirds less likely to catch a cold.
When you’re
sick with a cold, try to be extra-vigilant about keeping germs to yourself by
covering up coughs and sneezes. Teach children to do the same.
It may not seem
as if you’re doing much but if everyone took simple hygienic measures, the
results would be dramatic. In fact, the common cold would no longer be so
common.
