TV or not TV

TV has brought great benefits to society.

Television is one of the biggest human inventions. Television has been in homes since the 1950s. Of course, it has brought a lot of benefits into our lives. Naturally, it has some downsides, too. So, let’s discuss both and decide how television influences us.

One of the main advantages is that we can now take in information quickly and learn about things we wouldn’t otherwise have learned about. It allows us all to become much more aware about global issues, and grow as people. Thanks to imported shows and satellite crews being able to broadcast live from wherever they are, this has allowed people to learn about unfamiliar lands, and other nationalities to learn about other nations’ customs.

Even more we can get education staying at home and only using our TV-set. Just remember those famous British distant-classes that allows students who live in remote villages get education and take courses not leaving their farms and homes.

But on the other hand, a lot of people don’t take television that seriously and for many of them it has been just the primary source of entertainment. People gather together to watch some chat-shows or soap operas. The list is endless for the amount of information transported into our homes every day, changing the way people live and react to life situations. Politicians use TV for campaigning. For instance, in USA the President uses TV to broadcast current events from the White House. Due to the introduction of cable and satellite, people shop on TV, keep up-to-date with the stock market, get live news coverage from CNN. We know when to buy and sell stock, what natural disasters are headed our way and what latest fashions to wear.

But of course, television also has its downsides. One of which is that TV has its hypnotizing characteristics and children and adults tend to spend hours in front of the screen. We all know these “couch potatoes” kind of people who have less time to interact with others resulting in poor social skills. Television can drain productive time and efforts and essentially waste time on needless entertainment. There’re also some other problems and one of them is, of course, negatively TV influence on the youth when drugs or violence are shown.

All in all, I think, television has a good effect on our lives. We can get much more information about remote events and we even can get education staying at home. Also, television can be a good entertainment. However, there’s some disadvantages such as wasting time or unnecessary information for children.

How to prevent a cold

How to prevent a cold

Cold and flu are the most common diseases among human beings because airborne droplets from a cough or sneeze can travel far. «If one lands in your eyes or nose», explains Dr. Dennis Murray, professor of pediatrics and human development, «you could wake up sick a few days later».

For instance, a sick person who transfers her cold germs from her nose to her hands contaminates any object she touches. (Cold germ can survive for up to three hours on inanimate objects). Others who handle the object and then rub their own noses or eyes can get infected.
  1.  «This is why hand-washing is by far the most important thing you can do to avoid catching a cold», says Dr. Joseph F. Plouffe. So wash at every opportunity.
  2. One study showed you probably touch these parts of your face as often as three times an hour.  If you must, use a knuckle not a fingertip, because it’s less likely to be teeming with germs.
  3. Another method to avoid flu is except being at the places with poor air circulation because cold viruses can’t escape from there. So, office buildings, airplanes are a high-risk environments and another likely places to pick up cold germs.
  4. Lots of colds are caught in the kitchen. So don’t forget to put sponges and dishrags in the dish-washer on the hot cycle two or three times a week.
  5. Another simple method is to live a healthy life. Thirty to 45 minutes of moderate aerobic exercise, such as walking, cycling or dancing three times a week help us to prevent cold. And more isn’t necessarily better. Researchers have found that exercising vigorously for over an hour a day actually increases the likelihood that you’ll catch a cold. So, remember too much exercises can even hurt you.
  6. Also, you should get enough sleep because this keeps your immune cells powered up, according to research.
  7. Don’t ignore turning to some medical support. Vitamin E is believed to play an important role in immune function. But since its best food sources are fats and oils, people on low-fat diets may find it difficult to get enough. Doctors recommend taking a supplement of the vitamine E each day. To boost your body’s ability to use this nutrient, you should take the pill with a main meal — lunch or dinner — for most people.
  8. Echinacea, an edible flower, is believed to enhance your resistance to colds. Take it in extract, capsule, soft-gel or tablet form at the first sign of symptoms — and continue through the duration.
  9. Any warm fluid can help relieve cold symptoms and act as an expectorant. But chicken soup does seem to have an especially soothing effect.

And now I’d like to tell what I usually do to prevent flu!

The first method is to stay warm. Although getting cold doesn't actually cause a cold or flu, but being cold can reduce your quinsy and make you feel miserable. If your body feels cold and you have already been exposed to the flu or cold virus, your personal reaction to the cold may be enough to allow the flu or cold to take hold.

Eat healthily. Healthy foods such as vegetables, fruit, grains, etc., are an important part of keeping your body nutrition at its optimum. Processed, fatty, and sugary foods don't give the immune-boosting protection that healthier food does. Sugary foods can decrease immune function for up to five hours. Take Vitamin C. Whether in the form of a tablet, drink, or fruit, vitamin C might help you prevent the common cold. But of course, fresh oranges, grape fruits, pomelos are rich in vitamin C, so they must become your best friends. Add more garlic to your diet. Garlic has powerful anti-viral, antibiotic and anti-fungal properties and boosts the immune system in general. Studies have shown that those who consume garlic daily are two-thirds less likely to catch a cold.

When you’re sick with a cold, try to be extra-vigilant about keeping germs to yourself by covering up coughs and sneezes. Teach children to do the same.

It may not seem as if you’re doing much but if everyone took simple hygienic measures, the results would be dramatic. In fact, the common cold would no longer be so common.
